In Memoriam — Alexander Budrevics FCSLA FASLA OALA
Founder of Alexander Budrevics + Associates Limited, Landscape Architect, Alexander Budrevics, died peacefully at the age of 89 in his sleep at Sunnybrook Hospital - Palliative Care, on Apr. 11, 2014, among the loving care of his family.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, three children, four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Born on Jan. 3, 1925, Budrevics was a native of Riga, Latvia. He developed his love for the landscape and continued his education in Germany and England before immigrating to Canada in 1952. He grew professionally to be considered an international authority on swimming pool design and was a frequent speaker and contributor to swimming pool design magazines and local media.
Budrevics took great pride in being recognized by his peers and received public recognition for several years in the Canadian Registry of Who’s Who, a publication portraying the people who have shaped Canada into the nation it is today.
Budrevics was elected to the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) College of Fellows in 1975. Similarly he was recognized as a Fellow of both the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) in 1982 and the American Institute of Landscape Architects before its amalgamation with the ASLA.
A founding member of the Ontario Swimming Pool Association in 1958, Budrevics was elected as its president in 1964. He then served as president of the American Institute of Landscape Architects from 1969 -1971 and President of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) from 1977-1979, and was granted OALA Emeritus Membership in 1993. He served on the Board of Trustees of the American Society of Landscape Architects from 1982-1983, and was elected to four terms as a Board
Member of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects prior to his appointment as CSLA Life Member in 1993.
Beginning in 1958 Budrevics was the Landscape Architect/Consultant to the National Home Show in Toronto for over 50 years. He provided his consulting services to the Garden Festival, the Canadian Garden Pool and Landscape Show, as well as the original Canadian Pool and Patio Show.
In addition, to his professional accomplishments, Budrevics was celebrated for his long-standing service to the Latvian community as president of the Latvian National Federation in Canada General Assembly, Board Member of the Latvian Credit Union, the St. Andrew's Ev. Lutheran Latvian Church, and Scouts Canada Latvian District, where he achieved the highest-ranking order of Grey Wolf.
As founder of Alexander Budrevics + Associates Limited, Landscape Architects, in 1964, Budrevics became recognized as an authority in landscape architecture and designer of over three thousand landscape development projects. He was respected by his employees, professional colleagues and business associates with whom he actively interacted up to his last day before entering the hospital.
Funeral services were held at St. Andrew's Lutheran Latvian Church in Toronto, on Apr. 22.
