Paul GellatlyWhat is the most you’ve spent on a tropical plant? $50…$100…$250… How about $15,000?
As co-owner of the newest Plant Boutique opening in Yorkville in Spring 2022, The Botanical Collection; Regional Director of Horticulture for BC Rare Tropical Plants. He Previously held the position of the Curatorial Gardener for one of Canada’s largest Tropical Plant Collections, and the former Director of Horticulture for the Toronto Botanical Garden. Paul has a personal collection of 800+ tropical plants, including many rare and unusual specimens sourced from collectors worldwide. He has followed the recent surge of Tropical Plant Collectors, from imports to auctions, and will share with you the history, the trends, the opportunities, and a glimpse into his personal plant collection.
A passionate life-long horticulturist, Paul Gellatly is a co-owner of The Botanical Collection, a new rare/unusual plant boutique, coming soon to Yorkville. He is also the Regional Director of Horticulture for BC Rare Tropical Plants, importing tropical plants from all over the world. Considered an industry influencer, he is connecting a new generation of plant parents to unique plants. Paul has affiliations with the Toronto Botanical Garden as the former Director of Horticulture and The Toronto Zoo as former Curatorial Gardener managing one of Canada’s largest tropical plant collections.
Many online plant lovers may know Paul through his strong online presence as The Tattooed Gardener, with social media posts reaching 10 million people per month. He is an avid collector of rare and unusual plants with a personal collection of over 800 tropical plants. He is also an experienced hybridizer of daylilies, with 38 registrations with the American Daylily Society, which include Daylilies named for Horticulturists Monty Don, Marjorie Harris, and Paul Zammit. And Canadian Musicians Jann Arden, Michael Bublé and Leonard Cohen.
Although gardening has been a life-long passion, (He was a Director of the Waterloo Horticultural Society at 16 years old); entering horticulture as a profession nine years ago. Paul has been featured on Podcasts and Radio shows, in Newspapers and Magazines. Filming recently wrapped up on an episode featuring The Tattooed Gardener, for a new television series on Visionary Gardeners (episode airing March 21, 2022.) His home garden, which contained an eclectic mixture of plants, is featured in Tara Nolan’s book: Gardening Your Front Yard: Projects and Ideas for Big and Small Spaces.

Wildscaping: Explorations in Naturalistic Planting Design
Tony SpencerWildscaping is about using plant-driven landscape design to create and sustain dynamic garden spaces, filled with beauty and wildlife, to rekindle our relationship to the natural world. Join writer and planting designer Tony Spencer for an encounter with some of the international designers, innovations, issues, and landscapes leading the way – along with a look at his own experimental design projects – to inspire garden-making with a sense of purpose on the wild side.
Tony Spencer is the Canadian writer, photographer, speaker, and planting designer behind The New Perennialist, an influential blog focused on Explorations in Naturalistic Planting Design. His work is recognized and published internationally with Gold and Silver Awards from GardenComm (formerly Garden Writers of America). As planting designer, Tony won a top 2020 Landscape Design Honor Award from the US-based Perennial Plant Association. Day to day, Tony has become a puckish ringleader for the naturalistic movement in social media channels like Facebook group Dutch Dreams and Instagram. He has traveled extensively to gardens and symposiums internationally to keep up with the cutting edge of planting design, all while experimenting on a new series of wild-ish gardens at his beloved cabin in the rolling hills of Mono, Ontario.

Nick McCulloughAs a horticulturalist, designer and builder, Nick McCullough has the benefit of seeing through projects from inception to maintenance. Nick will share how this process leads to exceptional end results. From growing the plants, to design and ongoing maintenance, he’ll share how collaboration with the homeowners is key at each and every step.
Nick McCullough is an award-winning garden designer whose striking designs rely on a balance of natural paving and innovative perennial plantings. His firm is based in New Albany, Ohio where he and his team creates and maintains timeless bold gardens in and around the Midwest. Through his love for travel Nick has become an experienced landscape photographer who loves to share stories through the lens of his camera. Nick also lectures and gives workshops on garden design across the US and abroad. Nick proudly lives in the Midwest with his wife Allison and two children James and Charlotte.
